PVC Rods

Further Information

PVC rod is a good general purpose engineering plastic that has become important to customers and it provides some unique features

Manufacturers produce engineering plastics that are slightly oversize in either diameter and/or thickness. This oversize tolerance, which is listed in the tables below, is provided to assist customers to produce very accurate items within the size shown and remove any minor surface imperfection.

PVC Rod Tolerances:

Nominal Diameter Tolerance in mm
10 +0.1 to +0.6
12 +0.2 to +0.7
15 +0.2 to +0.8
20 +0.2 to +1
22 - 25 +0.2 to +1.1
30 +0.2 to +1.2
35 +0.2 to +1.3
40 +0.2 to +1.5
45 +0.3 to +1.7
50 - 55 +0.3 to +2
60 +0.3 to +2.3
65 - 70 +0.3 to +2.5
75 - 80 +0.4 to +3
90 +0.5 to +3.4
100 +0.6 to +3.8
110 +0.7 to +4.2
120 - 130 +0.8 to +4.6
140 +0.9 to +5.4
150 +1 to +5.8
160 - 180 +1.2 to +7.4
200 +1.3 to +8.5
225 - 250 +1.3 to +9
300 +1.3 to +10

Features of PVC Rod:

  • PVC rod is an economical plastic and is useful where components are being made to a budget. It can often also help reduce initial material costs.
  • PVC rod has a great chemical resistance and is often used in areas where chemical contact is often inevitable or likely
  • PVC rod can offer very good electrical resistance. It is one of the most common electrical insulating plastics available
  • PVC rod has a low moisture absorption and so this helps with the stability of components in damp or wet conditions
  • PVC rod has excellent abilities to be thermoformed, it can quite easily be warmed with moderate heat and formed to a shape and after cooling down will retain its new shape
  • Another very important feature of PVC rod is its fire rating as PVC rod has a class 1 fire rating and is self-extinguishing helping PVC Rod expand its applications
  • PVC rod can also be very easily bonded by commonly available adhesives

Applications for PVC Rod:

  • This plastic is often found in chemical tanks or valve components as PVC an excellent chemical resistance
  • PVC rod is also specified for prototype or model manufacture because it is very economical, easy to machine and is able to produce fairly intricate components
  • PVC rod can also be found inside household applications for light duty components to help reduce costs and reduce weight

Some technical details for PVC Rod:

  • Maximum long term service temperature: +60°C
  • Melting point: approx +175°C
  • Tensile strength: 75MPa manufac
  • Water absorption: 0.2

Bonding PVC Rod:

PVC is one of the easiest materials to bond using most commonly available and popular adhesives such as super glue, araldite or contact adhesives. There seems to be no special preparation to the PVC Rod required other than the adhesive manufacturer's recommendations.

Welding of PVC Rod:

PVC can be welded and this is usually done with a reasonably inexpensive plastic welding gun and PVC welding wire. With a reasonable amount of practice and competence, welding PVC rod is very successful and an economical process to produce a very strong joint.

Summary:

PVC rod is economical and highly easy to machine. It is exceptionally good at chemical resistance and has an excellent fire rating making it useful for a variety of applications. PVC Rod has high mechanical and tensile strength and is very easy to bond and weld. It also has excellent electrical insulation properties.
